Hello, Summer
I did a bunch of cooking this weekend, but nothing that was really blog-worthy (more recipes soon, I promise!). What WAS totally blog-worthy were my favorite cold rice noodles from Yun Nan Flavor Garden!
We went out for noodles after doing a long run on Sunday, and it was hugely satisfying to scarf savor a large umami bowl after 10 miles in the park! But I have to rewind to Saturday, the best day.
The fantastic feminist food magazine Cherry Bombe was having a yard sale to clean out their Carroll Gardens office and to benefit the ACLU. Total win win! I scored five new cookbooks, plus some hot sauces, coffee beans, wide-mouthed jar lids (I really needed these!), popsicle molds, natural skin care, and a pair of high-waisted skinny jeans and silver heels, both in my size!
After that triumph, I bottled some home-brewed kombucha and puttered about, + made a new gluten-free oatmeal chocolate chip cookie dough with bacon fat instead of butter. The recipe needs a few small tweaks but it’s delicious and will soon be ready for me to share it with the world!
Later in the afternoon Andrew and I walked back to Carroll Gardens to hear a sound installation by Scott Sherk. It was such an interesting and meditative experience! We were very near Malai Ice Cream, which I had been wanting to try, so we stopped in. Andrew got mango and I got brown butter pecan, and both were delicious.
Back to Sunday. If you read a lot of my posts then you already know that we like to celebrate everything. June 25th is our “engagement-iversary” (celebrating three years!) so we went out a few days early for oyster happy hour in honor of Martha’s Vineyard, the scene of the engagement. Excellent oysters at Camperdown Elm!
For dinner we tried out the chilaquiles recipe from one of my favorite new cookbooks, Healthier Together. Yum! We ended the weekend by checking out the new Netflix film Always Be My Maybe, which stars comedian Ali Wong as a chef—how could I resist? It was a fun movie made even more fun by the bacon cookie taste test we did while watching!
What did you all get up to over the weekend? Any fun plans for the July 4 holiday next week? We’re visiting family in Pennsylvania and North Carolina, and I’m sure there will be lots of cooking and eating in store for us, so I’ll be sure to share the highlights. See you next week!
